Buying a quality vehicle is the first step to enjoying a relatively stress-free and problem-free commuting experience. However, your efforts shouldn't end there.Â
You also must keep up a routine maintenance and repair schedule. It's the automotive equivalent of preventative medicine. And just like our bodies, if you don't work to prevent trouble, only pain and inconvenience will ensue!
BRAKE PADS - EVERY 30,000 MILES OR AS NEEDED
The life of your brake pads are largely going to depend on how you drive. Taking it easy on your brakes - coasting to decelerate and generally braking earlier - will help them last longer. If you do a lot of city driving, your brakes are going to need replaced more often than someone who drives on the highway a lot. The good news is that when you need new ones, you will know - they will squeal!
WINDSHIELD WIPERS - EVERY 6-12 MONTHS
Some people forget how important good visibility is until their wipers have failed! Don't wait. If you notice even the slightest drop in performance, replace them immediately.
BATTERY - EVERY 5 YEARS
Batteries are made to last. We often don't get much of a warning before the battery fails so your best bet is to check the life of your battery when you purchase it. When you start to approach that time, have it tested it at a car parts store.
RADIATOR HOSES - EVERY 75,000 MILES
You can inspect your hoses from time to time. Check for any visible cracks or damage. You can also feel with your hand for cracks and obvious thinning (making sure the engine is cool first).
TIRES - TREAD INDICATES REPLACEMENT
You should always inspect your tires periodically for damage. You should also monitor tread wear. Using a small ruler, place it between your tread ribs. Once you get up to 1/16th of an inch deep, it's time for new ones!
The trick is to properly maintaining your vehicle is to keep your eyes and ears open. Do regular inspections and have professionals inspect your vehicle from time to time as well.
